Selling a marine or offshore business in Singapore

Ship repair, marine supply, offshore services and port-adjacent businesses sell on their yard, berth and certifications. Cyclicality means buyers look hard at through-cycle earnings.

Why owners in this sector sell

  • The cycle rewards owners who exit into strength rather than through the next downturn.
  • Yard leases and capital equipment need recommitment on a long horizon.
  • Larger groups want Singapore capability and will pay for licensed, certified operators.

What moves you up the range

  • Own yard or a long-term berth or waterfront lease.
  • Class society approvals and customer certifications.
  • Through-cycle earnings, not just a strong recent year.
  • Long-standing shipowner and operator relationships held at company level.

What costs you money

  • A single strong year in a cyclical market is discounted; expect the buyer to normalise across the cycle.
  • Yard lease terms and remaining tenure often determine the entire valuation.
  • Environmental compliance and waste handling records are scrutinised.
  • Vessel and equipment condition needs independent survey; deferred maintenance is deducted.

What a buyer is really underwriting

Two marine or offshore business businesses with the same profit rarely sell for the same money. The gap is confidence: how quickly a buyer can verify the earnings, and how much of the operation walks out of the door with you.

That is why preparation is worth more than negotiation. Twelve to eighteen months of work on the four value drivers above will usually move the price further than any amount of arguing at the term sheet stage.
